Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I keep getting sharp pain above my left ear, in the skull area. Feels like quick jolts of jabbing electric hits. Last only seconds, but has been happening all day. Painful and distracting. Has happened in the past years, but usually only once every few months. Today, happening all day off and on.
The pain is in keeping with neuralgia (nerve-related pain).
This can be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes.
Some of the most common causes are:
(1) diabetes
(2) liver or kidney disease
(3) low levels of vitamin B12 or folate
(4) a side effect of medication
(5) trauma to the nerves
(6) thyroid disease
(7) infection
(8) exposure to toxins
(9) neurological conditions such as MS
(10) autoimmune diseases such as lupus, RA etc.
If it continues, then you may need to be seen and assessed by your doctor. Physical examination and blood tests would be needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
