What Causes Severe Pain After Receiving A Cortisone Shot?

I have had several cortisone shots in the past with no reaction ever. I got a cortisone shot for my tennis elbow last Wednesday. Within an hour I was in so much pain I was in tears the rest of the day. No swelling and no redness put my elbow locked up (I couldn t straighten it out or bend it at all). The pain and locking up lasted for 5 days. Was this steroid flare?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It can happen after an intramuscular injection. Nothing much to worry and it will settle by itself. As a first line management, you can take analgesics like Paracetamol or Aceclofenac for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
