What Causes Severe Pain And Numbness In Left Hip?

Hi, I have over the past 6 weeks or so had severe pain in my left hip and leg causing me many painful and sleepless nights. I could barely walk for a bout a week. The pain has gradually subsided after the use of antiinflammatories and ice packs with a resulting numbness in my left shin and still some tenderness in my leg / hip depending on stance, gait etc. Xray reveals no hip damage. Apart from having had constant lower back pain / inflammation immediately prior, this came out of the blue when I woke up one morning. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
