What Causes Severe Pain And Stiffness In The Thigh?

Two days ago, I awoke with severe pain and stiffness on outer upper right theigh. Very painful with certain motion but standing is the most comfortable. Have taken 800mg ibuprofen with minimal effect. Tried heat with no success either. Most painful when lying down, or sedentary for periods of time. Any thoughts?

Hi,

The most common cause for acute pain in a muscle would be trauma. This can be in the form of direct trauma to the area or indirect trauma, that is straining or spasm of the muscle from excess or repeated activity. If there is no history of any trauma then other causes would need to be considered such as:

(1) infection either a general infection or specific infection of the area.

(2) a mass or lesion in the area

(3) side effect of medication, that is statins

(4) fibromyalgia

You can consider the use of an anti inflammatory pain killers to help reduce your discomfort that is naproxen, cataflam or ibuprofen. Rest would also be important. If there is no improvement or worsening occurs, then you should see your doctor for an assessment.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
