What Causes Severe Pain At The Base Of Tongue While Coughing?

I had a very scary experience today. I coughed and it felt like I had a severe cramp at the base of my tongue. The pain was mostly deep in my throat. it even felt like I wasn t going to be able to put my tongue back in my mouth. It hurt to swallow or talk. This happened around 3:30 this afternoon. It s now after 11pm and it still feels like I have a slight cramp in my throat just under my jawline. What happened ?

Hi dear ,

The symptoms your mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as sore throat . This is the infection of the throat . It can be bacterial or viral . If it is viral infection then symptoms go away by their own in few days . I would suggest you to take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and swelling , do warm saline gargles and consult ENT specialist . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out conditions like Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia . In case of bacterial infection then doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin) for a week .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
