Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Pain Below Chest During Food Intake?
Had upper endoscopy at 11 a.m. on past Monday. It is now 4:45 p.m. on Thursday. I cannot eat solid, or even semisolid (scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes) foods without experiencing severe pain when food hits just below my right rib-cage. Pain runs from chest to mid-abdomen and even occurs when I drink water, though not so severe. I am diabetic, so inability to regulate food intake is critical. There is no pain when I don t attempt to eat/drink.
some irritation is expected after upper endoscopy but it seems that you're beyond that. What was the diagnosis of the endoscopy? Did you have esophagitis? Why was it done?
If you have esophagitis then swallowing might be painful until you receive proper treatment. Esophagitis is commonly caused either by reflux of gastric contents (acidic contents that "burn" the esophagus) or by fungal infection. A proton pump inhibitor will help in the first condition and antifungal treatment will help in the latter.
You can contact me again, if you'd like to provide more information about your medical history, symptoms (before and after the procedure) and treatment. I'll be glad to comment on them.
Kind Regards!
