What Causes Severe Pain From Abscesses In Mouth Despite Getting Amoxicillin?

i went to the dentist with a tooth ach a very bad one, told the dentist i think it may be abscesses. she gave me x-rays and said yes its abscesses and she wanted to pull it right then. without pulling on amoxicillin first. i told her that i em very scared of the denist. she gave me 5 shots to numb my mouth and i still felt the PAIN. she couldnt pull tooth. ive been on amoxicillin since yesterday and i look like a chipmonk and been running a fever. i go in and see the oral surguery on 7-22--2015 at 1:30pm will my abscesses be gone in time or should i set it for a later time?

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain the pain is not subsiding as you are taking only antibiotic Amoxicillin which is meant to reduce the bacterial infection that is causing dental abscess and fever is also due to Septicemia and Bacterimia as the bacteria enters blood from the site of infection and cause rise in temperature which is a body'd immune mechanism to fight with infection..
As far as pain is concerned it takes a considerably longer time for the infection to reduce sufficiently that the pain subsides and when there is pus formation at times the pain and infection does not completely subside until the tooth is either treated or extracted..
So you have to take a higher painkiller like Tramadol 50mg [Ultram] 4 times a day for pain reduction and continue with amoxicillin..
You should consult a dentist on the day you are appointed as you are already taking antibiotics so some level of resolution of infection will take place until then and the surgeon will definitely extract your offending tooth..
Avoid chewing from the painful side and take a soft diet..
Also avoid very hot and cold food as it can trigger pain..
Do not do hot compresses over swelling as it will exaggerate the swelling and discomfort..

Hope this information helps..
