What Causes Severe Pain In Back And Leg?

My mum is suffering from backache n pain in the leg n back every step she take. She is currently menstruating and is 44 years old and did not suffer from physical injury in the past few years. She has always complained of pain in her leg, but the pain is always never immense. This time, however, the pain is much harder to bear than before. May I know what could have caused this? Is her nervous system healthy? Thank you in advance
