What Causes Severe Pain In Knee Radiating To Mid Thigh And Calf?

I have knee pain that has gradually gotten worse over the past few months. The pain now is now from mid thigh and down. I was originally told it was arthritis but it seems to be in my muscles rather than joints. I have difficulty walking and also pain when laying down. Any thoughts on what it could be?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have severe severe pain in knee radiating to mid thigh and calf . Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons like anterior cruciate ligament injury ,torn meniscus , knee bursitis , sciatica , DVT and rheumatoid arthritis . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order X-ray , CT scans or MRI . Doctor may recommend muscle strengthening exercises along with injection of a corticosteroid drug , orthodox MR and surgery like arthroscopic surgery in severe damage . For now apply warm compresses to knee and calf muscle , take proper rest , take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and elevate your legs while lying down . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy .
