What Causes Severe Pain In Left Neck Radiating Towards Shoulder?

I have severe neck pain on the left side of my neck. The pain radiates down into my left shoulder when I try to move my neck. I am 73 years old and do not know how I may have injured myself, apart from an awkward sleeping position. What can I do to reduce or relieve the excruciating pain I am experiencing?

Hello
The most important reason of such excruciating pain of short duration may be due to these possibilities , these are:
1 Awkward sleeping , as you mentioned in your query.So for this take a combination of aceclofenac+tizanidine , one tablet at a time ( > 3-4 tables in divided doses .
2 Tendinitis ,as some times tendon of supraspinatus muscle tear due to sudden stretching of shoulder joint . Tablet above mentioned +rest .
3 In this age group sometimes heart pain also simulates like this .
So if you din't get relief with these measures then consult a Cardiologist and get his opinion.
Some pain killer cream also provide relief.
