Hi,

Your lumbar area may initially become painful and this pain may radiate towards leg for same nerve innervation after taking the epidural steroids due to irritation of drug near the nerve or steroid itself. Epidural steroid injection contains slow release crystals to provide long term pain relief. These crystals of the epidural steroid injection can cause irritation around the site of injection administration. This irritation may lead the sensation of pain around the site and may radiate towards the leg. Again, epidural steroid injection can cause a temporary flare in pain and inflammation after getting the short for a period of 2 days.

Nerve injury is a consequence or complication of the epidural steroid shot, though it is rare. In such type of case, you may get an area of numbness or an area of soreness that may radiate towards the leg due to same nerve irritation. Again, your ankle oedema or swelling may result from the epidural steroid shot as a complication. These side effects are mild and self limiting. With the passing of time, your symptoms will be improved and your pain should decrease as well as keep you pain free for few months.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
