What Causes Severe Pain In Legs After Playing Basketball?

Hey I m just a little worried about my dad. His foot has been hurting since his basketball tournament. Although he said it wasn t really hurting when he s playing but afterwards he started to feel leg pain. He was still able to walk without guidance the first time I saw him. But then his right foot started swelling and he couldn t walk using it at all so he needed someone s shoulder to guide him everytime he s walking. The next day the right foot is fine but it s still swelling. His left foot was fine before that but then it started hurting while his right foot is kinda fine he can walk on it now. The pain seemed to transfer on his left foot. Please help me. We re going to the doctors tomorrow but I just want someone to tell what he s condition is or is it serious by any chance. I m just worried for his well being please respond if you can. Thank you have a nice day!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about your Father having pain in both legs, the right foot swollen and painful too after playing basketball and now has to take a support for walking. Since there is leg pain and swelling your Father need the following:

Urgent ultrasound and color doppler of both the lower limbs.
Tests of blood.
Strict bed rest.
Consult a General Surgeon or vascular surgeon. He will get started treatment on the basis of these investigations. If DVT that is Deep Vein Thrombosis is present then he will need blood thinners and also other medications and will be kept on blood thinners which needs to be monitored by doing INR values from prothrombin tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
