What Causes Severe Pain In Lower Back And Knees?

I am 66 years of age. I have high blood pressure, high chrolostal, type 2 diabetes. I have severe pain in my upper left of my back, severe pain in my extremely lower back, right sciata pain all the way down to my feet, extreme pain in both of my knees, I cannot go up or down stairs, can only walk a few feet without completely giving out of breath, and, yes, I am overweigh. Any suggestions?

Hello,

Since you are overweight, sometimes the knees fail to bear the weight and hence the symptoms. Other medical conditions that can cause pain are OA, RA, gout, fibromyalgia, lupus, etc. Try to reduce weight, get connected to a Physical therapist. Get blood workouts done to detect OA, RA, Gout, etc., so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

Since you have high blood pressure, limit the intake of salt. Limit intake of red meat, alcohol, saturated fats, caffeine, processed and packaged food, etc. You will have to go for strict diet control, since you have high cholesterol level. Quit smoking or addictions if any, avoid trans fat, full fat dairy products, etc. Take whole grains that are well cooked, fruits, veggies, berries, nuts, etc. Switch to healthy lifestyle.

You are suggested to include anti inflammatory food in your regular diet. It will help to relieve your discomfort. You can take naproxen or acetaminophen, one stat when needed to get relieve from pain. Control your blood sugar level at all cost, as it will trigger and may make symptoms worse if neglected.

High blood sugar level damages nerves and causes neuralgia or may make sciatica worse. Since you have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, you are suggested to get done all routine cardiac tests and investigations done to stay on the safer side.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
