What Causes Severe Pain In Lower Chest Area?

My nephews wife is having very severe pain in the center of her upper stomach area. She IS currently in a hospital, so I am just getting a second opinion. The doctor s have said they think it has to do with her colon, so we suspected diverticulitis, but the pain almost seems too high for that. I have known several people who had diverticulitis, and the pain always seemed to be in the lower abdomen. She was in such severe pain when she went in to the emergency room, that even morphine did not completely alleviate the pain. Is there other diagnosis that you think could be possible here?

Hi,

There are several possible causes of severe pain in the lower chest area that could be considered, and the doctors at the hospital would have conducted tests and examinations to help diagnose the underlying condition.

Some potential causes of severe pain in the upper stomach area include:
* Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This is a condition where stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing inflammation and pain in the chest area.
* Peptic ulcer disease: This is a condition where there is a sore or ulcer in the lining of the stomach or duodenum, which can cause pain in the upper stomach area.
* Pancreatitis: This is inflammation of the pancreas, which can cause severe pain in the upper abdomen that may radiate to the back.
* Gallstones: These are hard deposits that form in the gallbladder, and if they block the bile duct, they can cause severe pain in the upper abdomen.
* Heart-related conditions: Although less likely in younger patients, chest pain can be caused by heart-related conditions, such as a heart attack or angina.
* Other digestive issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, infection, or functional dyspepsia.

It's important to note that the location of the pain can sometimes be misleading, and medical professionals take into account other symptoms and test results when making a diagnosis. It's best to rely on the expertise of the medical team who are treating your nephew's wife and follow their recommendations for further testing and treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
