What Causes Severe Pain In Patella And Tibia After Undergoing Surgery?

I had a patella tendon rapture followed by surgery. A figure 8 wire was used. Now, month post-op, I can walk with or w/o cane and excersise. For a week or so now I have pain (sometimes acute) at location of wire connection to tibia and above. An impression is that it is rubbing agains tendon or other tissues... The pain prevents me from walking normally (only on straight leg, slowly) and from doing excersises. Should the wire be removed?
