What Causes Severe Pain In The Abdomen While On A High Fiber Diet?

I upped my fiber intake fast and furiously almost doubling my daily intake, now the last 2 days I have been experiencing intermittent severe abdominal pain. I have returned to my regular dietary intake however, how long will this pain last it has been 2 days now?

Hello,

I would like to tell you that a small amount of fiber in your daily diet is essential to maintain a good digestion and it also helps to prevent high cholesterol levels, colon cancer, and constipation.

But excessive intake of fiber may cause bloating, abdominal pain and in some cases intestinal obstruction. So I would advise you to limit the intake of fibers to the required quantity. The pain should subside in a day or two but if it doesn't or increase in severity visit an emergency room to get yourself checked.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma.amman
