What Causes Severe Pain In The Hip Joint?

my husband has had occasional pain starting from left hip joint starting about 3-4 weeks ago. then the pain occurs on left knee. the pain comes and goes. it seems to occur often when he stand up or walk. when I tried to massage his left knee just now. he said the pain traveled to the left hip joint. what do you think he has?
