What Causes Severe Pain In The Joint Of Index Finger?
I have intermittent pain in the joint closest to my fingernail of my index finger. The pain exhibits itself often when I attempt to pick up a gallon of milk as you normally would with the index & middle finger going through the handle. What might this be caused by?

It could be arthritis or tendon injury problem in that local joint.
For that, I suggest you investigate with an x-ray of the local part.
Meanwhile, you can be prescribed Brufen like anti-inflammatory drug and local diclofenac containing gel application over that area.
