What Causes Severe Pain In The Knee With Swelling?

Hello, Presently I am troubled by severe pain in my left knee. The knee is swollen ( I believe that it is the actual knee bone that is swollen) and at times I have to stretch my leg gingerly since abrupt movement results in very painful knocking of the bones. What could be the problem?

Hi,

What is your age? How long the pain is there? Any history of trauma? If no history of trauma, pain in knee with swelling and knocking/popping sensation while moving the joint suggest osteoarthritis with joint effusion.

Kindly see an orthopedist. You may be asked for an x ray of the joint. Meanwhile minimise joint movement, and take ibuprofen/paracetamol tablets 3 times a day for pain relief.

After swelling and pain subsides, regular muscle strengthening exercise and physiotherapy will help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK
