What Causes Severe Pain In The Knees?

Hi, I m a 46 yr old female , my question is if I have been suffering from continuous knee pain in both knees, from arthritis, already had scope surgery in both, also cortisone injections in both and some physical therapy....I m still in terrible pain daily! Everyday is getting harder and harder just to walk in my home. I asked my Dr. If I would benefit from knee replacement (both knees) He said NOO I m too young to have knee replacements, he said by the time I m 55 I would need replacements again! Don t I have the right to ask and have it done??

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. As you are a diagnosed case of arthritis and under the supervision of your physician thus remain under his regular guidance and follow up as he must be knowing all your case history and symptoms and since I'm unable to examine you directly, I at most can let you know about the symptomwise approach:

i. Rule out other causes of knee pain like tuberculosis, ask for Hb%, WBC, ESR, RA test, X-ray Knee - AP & Lateral.

ii. As gone through cortisone injection, remember that it should not be given repeatedly, as it may accelerate the process of articular destruction.

iii. If no response to routine treatment
. If knee is swollen, warm & tender.
. If there is wasting of quadriceps muscle, refer to an Orthopedic Surgeon [since he will be in better position to advise you regarding knee replacment]
