What Causes Severe Pain In The Left Foot?

I have a sharp pain in my left foot by my big toe and bunion area. The pain is extremely painful and feels like some one is zapping that area and I can not sleep. I took Alieve at 7:00 pm and that did not help. It started after I finished my walk and I have never had anything like this. Just thought I got a blister so I soaked it in Epson salt for a 1/2 hour. If I walk around it is ok but if I stop the horrible pain triggers begin again.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
Thanks for putting up your query over here.
Severe pain in big toes can be a sign of gout.
If I were your treating doctor,I would recommend,
-Over the counter analgesics like ibuprofen or naproxen as and when needed.
-Local ice pack application for 15-20 minutes.
-Give absolute rest to the joint.
If the pain is non relieving, drugs like oxycodone or steroids are used(prescription drug)
Visit to rheumatologist/orthopaedician is must for confirmation of diagnosis.
Joint fluid examination, blood and urine tests for uric acid levels will be needed.
Maintenance therapy with allopurinol drug may be given.
-Avoid alcohol.Have adequate intake of water.Keep body weight within control.
-Avoid diet containing meat, lentils, fish as they may excaberate the symptoms.
Hope this information helps.
Thanks.
