Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Pain In The Left Hand While Suffering From Paralysis?
My wife had a stroke leaving her paralyzed on her left side. She has at times considerable pain in her left immobile arm and hand. Her doctor has prescribed for her Gabapentin in 100 mg capsules. Apart from the normal listed contraindications what effect does this drug have on the liver and the kidneys?
The pain in the paralyzed limb may be due to post paralytic neuropathy or due to a muscle spasm in upper motor neuron lesions. A regular exercise with centrally acting muscle relaxant may elevate the symptoms.
Gabapentin drug also is useful to elevate the symptoms. However, gabapentin may cause drowsiness, disorientation, or dizziness etcetera.
Gabapentin is not bound to plasma proteins, does not induce hepatic enzymes and is not metabolized. At steady state, it has a half-life of 6-8 h and is eliminated unchanged by renal route with a plasma clearance proportional to the creatinine clearance.
If your renal function is good, then nothing to worry, please consult your neuro physician so that he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
