What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Abdomen On The Right Side?

My husband had quadruple hernia surgery several years back. He is now having intense pain in the lower abdomen on right side also pain in back on same side. He currently is on pain meds for the pain. At Ct scan was done and no findings. Blood work done. Urine test nothing shows up. Is it possible that the mesh fro the surgery could be deteriorating and causing the pain?
