What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Back And Buttock?
Hello...I have been having very severe lower back/ buttock shooting pain whenever I am sitting for a short period of time- even on a pillow as a cushion...I have recently had bariatric surgery and have lost over 100 pounds since last September. but i can not figure out why now I have such severe lower back(on both sides) and the hot/knife-wrenching pain when sitting...please try to find an explanation for this..thank you.
Obesity is a risk factor to cause lower back pain. Bariatric surgery commonly reduces the risk of lower back pain. Weight reduction results in improving the symptoms.
However, worsening pain can occur in the lower back after Bariatric surgery because of acute weight loss on the spine. Following surgery a decrease in IAP (Intra abdominal pressure) creates spinal disequilibrium, forward bending of the lumber spine causing back pain, herniation and radiculopathy.
You are suggested to visit your treating Physician for follow up check up & Imaging tests to detect the pathology causing you discomfort.
Your treatment will depend upon the severity of your symptoms and pathology detected.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
