What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Back?

My husband has been having a lot of back pain and has been seen by several different specialists who have told us he needs surgery but it isn t bad enough yet. As the months have passed he has developed a strange honeycomb pattern bruising that started on his lower back and is spreading up throughout his shoulders. A specialist said it is a possibility of a leukemia. Can this be positive by just looking at it?
