What Causes Severe Pain In The Ribs After Coughing?

Towards the end of respiratory virus. After gripping coughing episode that literally made me dry heave. My middle back, extending to the sides is extremely painful. It feels muscular, exterior of rib cage. The pain fluctuates between 7-10 depending on position.Lying down its particular painful on back, sides less, stomach even less. My coughing has mostly ceased after 1 month of it. Never a fever. A small amount of sputum when I do cough. Previously deep very dry coughing. Therefore it s productive. I m not one to run to the doctor unless I m convinced it is serious, high continuous fever etc. Is there anything potentially critical that may need immediate attention or might it be safe to give it a week or two if symptoms do not worsen?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to a muscle strain probably due to the coughing. Thus, I recommend using a muscle relaxant such as Baclofen three times a day. I also suggest using a mucolytic to treat the cough and drink a lot of liquids. In my opinion, the symptoms will relieve on its own and there is nothing to be worried.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
