What Causes Severe Pain On Left Side Of The Face?

I am experiencing pain on the left side of my face, from my temple down to my jaw. Within the last three weeks I had a cracked molar on the lower left side. I did see a dentist and had a temporary cap put on the broken tooth. I was advised to return in the next two weeks to have the permanent cap placed. Since the dental work the pain has gone from a dull annoyance to some shooting pain on the left side of my face. I also saw my doctor, who gave me some anti-inflammatory drug - Naproxen. I started taking the medication about two days ago. The doctor states it may be from a condition that occurs when one is in the dentist chair for an extended period of time. I believe he referred to it by TJM. I never had this before. I am hoping the pain will subside as I a have another dental appointment next week. Is this a common issue and is there anything else I should or could do to ease the pain?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if you have a cracked molar and if the cap is placed on it without root canal treatment, then there is a possibility that the nerves are exposed leading to nerve irritation and pain..
It can lead to radiating pain to the temple and jaw..

Secondly it can be due to TMJ which can be due to acute pain caused due to displaced articular disc or dislocation of lower jaw..

For confirmation you need to get a Panoromic x ray done after getting the temporary cap removed..
It will help in evaluating the jaw joints and also the tooth..

In case if it is due to tooth then either Root Canal Treatment or extraction of the tooth depending on condition of tooth can help followed by antibiotics and painkillers..

In case of jaw joint related problem muscle relaxant and painkillers along with Physiotherapy and soft diet can be advised..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
