What Causes Severe Pain On The Neck And Below The Jaw Line?

Intermittent pain at left neck just below jaw line, below ear, that builds, lasts for 10 or so seconds, goes away, then repeats. At times goes away for an hour, then repeats. Seems exacerbated with first bite of food. Should I be concerned? Non smoker, healthy 75 year old.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe pain on the neck and below the jaw line which could be due to

- Malocclusion and any swollen luymph node
- Cervical spondylosis
- TMJ problem like ankylosis and TML disc problem
- Bruxism and angina

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to eat soft food and avoid intake of any hard food substances from that side. Apply warm compresses to TMJ and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain. You should consult oral surgeon once for proper examination and doctor may order CT scan or MRI of TMJ to confirm the diagnosis. Doctor may also recommend physical therapy along with stretching exercises. You should take muscle relaxant exercise as well.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
