What Causes Severe Pain Under The Rib Cage After A Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy?

I had the vertical sleeve gasterectomy (weight loss surgery) on June 20th and I am having some extreme pain on the left side right under my rib cage - I have had friends tell me this is because of the trauma to the spleen and the blood being cut off to the spleen during surgery and that this should go away - is that true or what do you think could be causing this?????? I have called my bariatric surgeon s office but they have not returned my phone call yet

Hello,

Intraoperative spleen or intestinal injury can cause post operative severe pain in the abdomen. So in my opinion, you should definitely go to the emergency room (ER) and get done clinical examination of abdomen and ultrasound abdomen to rule out internal injury. If needed CT scan should be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
