What Causes Severe Pressure And Congestion In The Ears?
I have recently begun noticing pressure in my ears. It feels like they are plugged and no matter what it doesn t go away. Also, my left ear and side of my head hurts badly! Typically at night. The left ear has a moderate aching while my head feels like it s pressing against my skull, that pressure. Is this a sign of something worrisome or should it go away on its own?
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The pressure in your ear may be due to a condition called eustachian tube dysfunction. The eustachian tube is a tube in the inner ear that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. It has different functions including equalizing of pressure. One of the symptoms of eustachian tube dysfunction is abnormal pressure or fullness in the ear.
This can sometimes occur if there is an ear infection or sinus infection or cough and cold present. It can also occur with allergies. The use of an antihistamine decongestant combination may help eg zyrtec d, allegra d, claritine d, benadryl. In some cases, it can take a few weeks for improvement to occur.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
