What Causes Severe Spasms In The Legs?

My son, age 37, has had L2 and L3 disk problems for several years. He lifted too much a week ago. He had extreme spasms in thigh and down to foot. Thigh quivers. Hurts to stand or walk. When to chiropractor the next day, that didn t help. Went to ER yesterday where he was given 2 shots, one was a steroid, the other a muscle relaxer and a prescription for IBU 800 and a muscle relaxer (don t know what kind) Pain is worse today. What should he do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes disk prolapse may sometimes give severe pain. However, most of the times that settle itself in little time with pain killers and muscle relaxant. So if the pain is not unbearable, I would suggest he should use the prescribe medicine worth some bed rest, and see.physiotherapy and heat application may also help. If pain is too much severe then he can see the doctor for stronger pain killers.

However, if there is weakness in the limbs, or urinary incontinence, or pain is unbearable, then you should urgently see the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
