My daughter had an emergency c-section with general anesthesia due to excess fluid around the baby which the cord was coming out first. It has been 3 days and she is still in the hospital with severe pain from gas and backed up bowels. What are the risks?
Hello, Failure to regain normal bowel movements after abdominal surgery depends on several associated things like prior fluid and electrolyte balance, duration of the surgery, intra-operative and post-operative developments etc. Management is usually done by observation, maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance, prevention of possible infection through prophylactic antibiotics, passage of a flatus tube to relieve pain due to gaseous distension and so on. There are no known long term risks as the condition usually is temporary. Hope this helps.
