Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Swelling Around The Ankles After Taking Ibuprofen And Flexeril?
This past week we were doing some home improvements. I was on my feet a lot but had back pain so bad that I took ibuprofen and flexeril together. That night I had extreme swelling in my ankles and it has continued at days end. I have never had this swelling before. Do you think it came form meds or should I consult my family doctor?
It does not look like a side effect of the medications you took unless you are sensitive and the medicines interacted. However, swelling in the ankle is a clear indication of salt retention in your body and being overweight. It may also be due to right-sided heart problem or developing kidney disease, lymph-edema, thyroid dysfunction, etc.
Visit ER, get physically examined. Get CBC, urinalysis, imaging tests, lipid function tests and other required screening investigations done. Get evaluated so that you can get treated at the earliest. You can take acetaminophen for pain and keep your feet on a stool while seated and pillow when on the bed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K,
General & Family Physician
