What Causes Severe Swelling In The Left Leg?

I have severely swelling in my left leg and foot. It is more prominent during hot weather. It began about 30 years ago and no doctor has been able to tell me why. I had a varicose vein removed at Emory Hospital in Atlanta and was told this might help. It did not. I AM 75 YEARS OLD AND IN LOTS OF PAIN. Please tell me if it could be from a fall I had many years ago which resulted in a large hematoma in my pelvic region. I was told I probably had ovarian cancer, after tests this was proven to be wrong. I have never had a MRI nor ultra sound nor any tests where the lymph system is followed to check for obstructions. SHOULD I have this done and by whom in Georgia?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hot weather causes vasodilation, this is widening of blood vessels, this is the reason that swelling occurs in hot weather.

It is possible that there is a link to the pelvic hematoma, it could have affected blood supply in the lower limbs. Assessment by either a cardiovascular surgeon or an interventional radiotherapist may be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
