What Causes Severe Swelling In The Upper Lip?

Hi, my husband had a big swelled up upper lip and surrounding nose and face area for a day. We thought it was an insect bite. The swelling didnt improve. We went to a walk in and the doctor gave antihistamine and some ointment to apply in the superior labial frenulum (upper). After another day, the swelling slight decreased but the tissue inside the mouth (superior labial frenulum) is not inflammed and paining. Then we went to the walk in doctor again, this time he asked to continue with the antihistamine and if it keeps bothering to take amoxycillin. After another day, now the pain is extreme and the swelling in that tissue is way bigger! Please guide us what to do..

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems like swelling of upper lip, nose and face along with sore tissues inside upper lip seems to be due to allergic reaction to something causing allergic Angioedema and recurring swelling seems to be caused due to it..

It can be due to a number of common things like foods or medicine, animal danders, pollen, poison ivy, sea food or even other things..
As the swelling has increased along with severe pain it is alarming needs immediate medical attention..
Consult an Emergency room and you can be given steroid injection along with anti-allergics to reduce swelling and do cool compresses over the lips.

If there are recurring episodes of the same or the swelling does not get better then consult an Allergist and get evaluated and he can do allergic testing like RAST TEST, food challenge test etc to rule out the exact cause of allergic reaction and also advise you to prevent exposure to allergen as well as give you Immunotherapy for reducing the severity of allergy symptoms..

Hope this information helps.

Thanks and regards.
