What Causes Severe Swelling On The Ankle After An Injury?

I sprained my ankle severly by landing on someones foot going for a rebound in basketball. Initially the swelling wasnt bad, but now after a day, the swelling has reached up into my lower calf.. is this normal in a sprain or is there a potential fracture?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be a minor contusion or sprain after the injury.

As of now, you can use analgesics/anti-inflammatory combination like Aceclofenac/Serratiopeptidase for symptomatic relief.

Elevate the affected limb and apply ice packs.

If symptoms persist you can consult an orthopedician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
