What Causes Severe Throbbing Pain At The Back Of The Neck?

I have a severe throb/pain in the back left side of my neck. It has happened one or two times in the last few years, but in the past week alone it has happened twice, last night being the most recent. It started around 12, and i am still feeling the throb/pain. All instances involved sex
