Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my 78 year old grandmother was up all night last night vomiting. She woke up today with a fever and is repeating herself over and over saying my nieces s name. She was taken to the hospital. her white count is slightly high. She has an IV for fluids and ABT. She was diagnosed with kidney CA 2 weeks ago which she also has in her lungs. The treatment plan is to remove the kidney and then treat will pill form of chemo for the lungs. she was dehydrated., but what could the incoherent repetitive speech be from?
Vomiting followed by fever, dehydration and incoherent speech in her case is most likely cased by a sepsis. Raised white cells is already suggestive of an infection. A blood culture may help to identify the germ in cause. Her underlying condition (cancer) may not be the cause though this condition may make a situation serious since she is already fragile. I will suggest she continues to receive her iv fluids and ABT as planned by her Doctor. When she gets over this present condition, you may see an Oncologist and proceed with her cancer management.
Hope this will help. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mbuomboh Veranso
