What Causes Sharp Pain From Left Side Of Head Till Jaw?

My daughter (14) is having as she says "on the left side of her head from her hair line down the side to her jaw, she says it feels like an explosion and very sharp pains and then it stops" She says it happens mostly if she laughs, or clears her throat or coughs. But it's happening off and on. ?? What could this be?

Brief answer - Trigeminal neuralgia ( facial nerve pain )

Detailed answer - As per your query sharp pain from headline till jaw on left side of your daughter is because of nerve inflammation or disorder , the nerve which supplies head, neck, ear , lips , face and teeth area i.e trigeminal nerve/ facial nerve.

I would suggest you to visit dentist once and get proper examination done. It cannot be find out by x-rays or normal testing, only MRI can reveal pressure on nerve. Once other causes of facial pain such as TMJ disorders , dental infection will be eliminated then start the treatment of condition.

Gabapentin, Baclofenac is the first line treatment option. Injection of alcohol in the areas of trigeminal nerve will eliminate pain and gives cure to this condition. Micro vascular decompression and radio surgery are other recent treatment options but only after proper diagnosis you should opt it.
