What Causes Sharp Pain In The Wrist?

Hi, I have a horrible problem with my wrist. Every once in a while through the day I get a sharp pain on the thumb side of my right wrist, but every night when I lay down the pain is unbearable and keeps me up all night. I'm 24 and quite frankly I'm always afraid to ask my family doctor anything because he gives me the impression that I'm only there for medication. This pain has to stop! I have a 2 year old and I play video games very rarely (hardly the cause for carpal tunnel).
