What Causes Sharp Pain Under The Rib Cage?

Hi, I woke up last night with severe sharp pain just under my left rib... this morning it's worse.. it's bad enough to make me want to go see a doctor, but first what could it be.. is it in stomach the main stomach? what causes pain like that all of a sudden...
