What Causes Sharp Stabbing Pain In The Upper Abdomen During Pregnancy?

I am 7 1/2 weeks pregnant and having terrible upper abdominal pain just below my xyphoid process. It goes from a sqeezing pain to a sharp stabbing pain. I have had this before and u/s was normal. Cholelythiasis runs in my family and all have had their gallbladders removed. My doctor told me to go on a low fat diet, which I'm trying and have been for a week. The pain still comes though. Sometimes it doesn't even matter if I eat or not, the pain is there. I've been trying Zantac 75mg, but getting little relief. What should I do, how can I get rid of the pain, and is this something I'm just going to have to deal with until I deliver? PLEASE HELP!

Hi,
I understand your concern.
Though sharp stabing pain in upper abdomen can caused by. acute peptic ulcer, constipation with gasses collecting under diaphragm,Biliary colic.
As your family history suggests gall bladder problems need to be excluded Though USG was normal in past, it's worth repeating to exclude bile stone/ biliary colic.
* I would advise for a consultation of a gastroenterologist,he will pin point the diagnosis & advice you specific medicines ( Antibiotic, anti spasmodic , antacid drugs as per indication),/dietary changes & life style changes

Thanks.
