What Causes Sharp Stabbing Pain On The Left Side Of My Chest?

I have a sharp stabbing pain on the left side of my chest, around and underneath the left side of my left breast. It came on suddenly and has been constant for an hour and a half. The pain increases when I inhale and I am struggling to find a position sitting, standing or laying down that alleviates the pain. What could it be and what should I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Strong stabbing chest pain that is worse with breathing may be due to pneumothorax or diseases that involve the layers that cover the lungs (the pleura).
I would recommend you to see your doctor as soon as possible and have at least a chest x-ray, but the doctor may ask for some more examinations to evaluate your lungs.

According to the results of these tests, the doctor will decide on further management.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
