What Causes Sharp Sting Type Pain On Left Foot Followed By Numbness?

I just experienced a sharp sting type of pain on my left foot. It felt like I got stung by a bug but, soon afterwards my foot felt like it was sleep like that type of feeling one would get when not moving around. I don t know if it s sciatica but, I also have to point out that I suffer from TMD with pain mostly on my right jaw. I also have borderline high cholesterol but, my blood pressure is within normal limits. My glucose level is 99 so, it s not high but, I guess it could be lower. Should I be worried about any sharp electric pain on any part of the left side of my body? Although in this case it seems like Paresthesia in my left foot.

Hello,

Your symptom can be indicative of developing peripheral neuropathy. It can also be due to insect sting, charcot arthropathy or some foreign body on foot. Get yourself examined for this. If any foreign body is detected it will be removed. If the symptom is due to insect bite it will go away in a day or two.

For insect bite you can take antihistamine to reduce the symptoms like soreness and inflammation. Take NSAIDs, one tab after food to get rid of pain. Get clinically examined by a Neurologist. Get done nerve biopsy and NCV tests, EMG, etc. Your treatment will depend on the pathology diagnosed.

Get connected to a Physical therapist for massage therapy and exercises, etc. If required you will be given therapeutic footwear to help walk with balance. Maintain your blood pressure and blood glucose level at all cost. Charcot arthropathy is commonly treated with protective split, walking brace or cast.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
