What Causes Sharp Stinging Pain In The Middle Three Toes Of Left Foot?

I have been getting sharp, stabbing pains in the middle three toes on my left foot. The very first time it happened, I seriously thought I had been stung by a bee. It happens in all three toes at the same time, lasts a few seconds and is gone. It doesn't matter if I'm in bed resting or up moving around - it seems random -with no specific trigger. I was recently tested for diabetes because my feet fall/hands fall asleep for no apparent reason - but all my levels were in the normal range. The sharp pains do not seem to be correlated to when my feet fall asleep...any thoughts/ideas?
