What Causes Shooting Pain In Back?

i have a shooting pain in my left side and its been like that for the past few days..and its toward my waist around my appendix area and then i get a shooting pain in my back sometimes should i go to the E.R. if it gets worse and wont go away ?? and should i be concerned??
