What Causes Shooting Pain In The Shoulders Radiating To The Neck?

Good Day, this past Friday night while driving, I experienced pain shooting from my shoulder blades and middle of my back up my neck to the base of my skull, got a extremely bad headache, migraine immediately, nauseous, blurred and double vision. Also a loss of balance when walking or turning my head when i stopped the vehicle. I was taken to the health centre in my area and they did blood work and an ekg on me, administered a shot of tordol/gravol for the pain and kept me in overnight for observation. My headache was rated at an 8 out of 10. The next morning nothing had changed so they started an iv of nacl and a pkg of massax (migraine pain killer)? And also a shot of morphine for the pain. over the day the pain slowly subsided, but they had to discharge me due to a lack of staffing. I still have a bit of a headache and upset stomach and the pain at the base of my skull. My doctor told me that i Just had a super migraine? is there a possibility that i have had a tia stroke? I have been to a back specialist that sent me in for a mri on my neck 6 months prior to this to address my in balance problem and he recommended me to ask my family doctor to get me into see a neurologist or surgeon due to narrowing of the spinal column. My family doctor said there was no need.? Should i be getting a second opinion due to this issue? Thanks for your time

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The pain, dizziness, nausea & double vision can be related to some developing spinal problem (spinal stenosis, slipped disc, cervical spondylitis, etc).

Migraine headache or Migraine associated vertigo are triggered by hypoglycemia, anxiety, stress, certain food, medicines, low blood pressure, stroke, smoking, alcohol or addictions.

Stay away from addictions if any. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT, to rule out Vertigo & cervical stenosis. If vertigo is detected you will be treated with medications, avoid driving for a month or two.

He may refer you to a GP for blood test, CT, MRI, ECG, Cerebral angiogram, EEG, etc to rule out any brain injury or Stroke. Your treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
