What Causes Shortness Of Breath After Taking Nitrofurantoin?

Hi, I am a 73 yo woman. Two years ago I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and a-fib. I ve been taking eliquis 2.5 mg and methoprolol and was feeling much better. Half a month ago I was tested by a doctor and told I might switch from eliquis to aspirin. I went abroad and since I had cistitis took a course of nitrofurantoin. Then I started feeling shortness of breath even after walking a small distance which never happened before and a dry cough. I thought it might be a side effect of nitrofurantoin but now 9 days later I still have those symptoms. Can it be because I switched from eliquiz to aspirin ( now I take aspirin 75 mg + mAgnezium or this can still be side effects of antibiotics?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There are 2 main things we should check in your case:
1. Possible recent cardiovascular problem.
2. Hyperacidity problems of the stomach (acid reflux or gastritis) aggravated by Aspirin and Nitrofurantoin intake.

So, as coughing is causing breathing problems, should consult immediately with your cardiologist to rule out any possible cardiovascular event first.

Then, go for upper endoscopy to rule out stomach issues by a gastroenterologist.

For the moment, take antacids to stabilize stomach pH.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini,
