What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Cold In An Elderly Person?

MY HUSBAND IS 61. HE HAS NEVER BEEN SICK A DAY IN HIS LIFE. NOT EVEN A COMMON COLD. HE IS ITALIAN. HE WAS A HEAVY DRINKER MOST OF HIS LIFE WITH DRINKING STRAIGHT WHISKEY AND WAS A WORKING FUNCTIONING DRINKER AND NEVER WAS SICK FROM HIS DRINKING AND COULD HIDE IT WELL, AS HE HAD A JOB THAT TOOK MUCH THINKING AS WELL AS MUCH OF HIS TIME. HE COULD NOT MAKE MISTAKES. FOR THE LAST TEN MONTHS MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN VERY SICK AND DOES NOT SEEM LIKE THE SAME MAN. HE HAS BEEN SICK TO HIS STOMACH EVERY DAY, HOWEVER HE QUIT DRINKING 12 YEARS AGO THANK GOD. HE USE TO HAVE A FLAT STOMACH AND IS SO EXTENDED HE LOOKS LIKE A PREGNANT WOMAN READY TO GIVE BIRTH. HE HURTS IN THE LEFT SIDE AND HE HAS LOOSE STOOL EVERY MORNING 3 TO 5 TIMES A DAY. HE USE TO HAVE LOW BLOOD PREASURE NOW IT IS RUNNING 177/90 AND THAT IS VERY HIGH FOR HIM. ONE OF HIS EYES WANTS TO STAY SHUT. HE IS WEAK AND SMOKES ABOUT 2 PACKS OF CIGS A DAY AND BREATHS HEAVY AND HAS SHORTNESS OF BREATH. HIS REGULAR DR. DID A CT SCAN WITH CONTRAST OF THE LIVER, AND THE PELVIC AREA WAS CHECKED. ALSO THE PANCREAS. BLOOD WORK WAS DONE AND EKG WAS DONE. ALL OF THIS SHOWED NOTHING. I WAS TOLD TODAY BY ANOTHER DR THAT HE NEEDS TO HAVE A LIVER BIOPSEY . ESPECIALLY SINCE HE DRANK SO MUCH IN HIS PAST. MY HUSBAND ALSO HAS LOTS OF RED BLOOD SPOTS, SOME VERY TINY AND OTHERS A BIT BIGGER ON HIS STOMACH, HIS BACK, BOTH HIS SIDES. IS THIS FROM THE LIVER?ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. HIS URINE SEEMS TO BE A NORMAL COLOR. HIS EYES LOOK A TAD YELLOW TO ME. HOW EVER ITS HARD TO TELL IF HIS BODY SINCE HE IS ITALIAN WITH THE DARKER SKIN. THANK YOU. JOY GIACCHINA YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I am sorry for your husband's situation. I fully agree with the doctor to do the liver biopsy. It is very important to detect for alcoholic liver disease related to.

Regards and feel free to ask me again.
