What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Cough When Diagnosed With COPD?

What can I do to stabilize my copd. I was diog about a year ago with very mild COPD. I am now trying to lose weight, and exercise walking 1-3 miles a day, and I have not smoked in 29 years. I use a nebulizer in the morning thinking I was helping but it seems to make it worse. I have a slight cough and very mild shortness of breath. I will be 75 this Sept and would like to plan on living another 10 to 15 years. I play bridge and cards 3 times a week to keep my brain active. I worry ABOUT DYING ALL OF THE TIME AND IT RUINS MY DAYS

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about a 75 year old male worrying of dying all the time, has mild breathlessness and slight cough, not smokes in many years, has mild COPD.
I can understand your wish to live longer but you worrying unnecessarily about very mild symptoms.
The best way is to get the most appropriate diagnosis by doing the following:
Consult a Pulmonologist for clinical evaluation, examination.
Pulmonary function tests.
CT scan of chest.
Tests of blood for hemoglobin and serum proteins in particular.
Vitamin D and A estimation.
All these things together will give you the best possible diagnosis so that you can have perfect corrective management of breathlessness, slight cough and any deficiency that will help you the most.
Avoid pollutes area.
Avoid exposure to extreme changes in temperature zones.
Take proper medications as advised and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
